Ep 94: Applied Compute CEO on the Limits of RL, the New AI Hyperscaler & Why Post-Training Wins Inference

Unsupervised Learning · 2026-10-06

Speaker 1 | 00:00 - 00:02
How do you kind of characterize where we are today?

Speaker 2 | 00:02 - 00:25
What we have with RL is we essentially have a hill climbing machine. The hardest part is actually defining the hill to climb, which is why evals, I think, is like a really important thing for companies to, a, focus on building and b, actually like safeguard pretty carefully. Your employees are not fungible. You would not like be comfortable with them going to another company and doing work there. And same thing with these models.

  • what is your default/workhorse coding agent today, Oct 2026? [19 ❤️]

Josh Woodward (@joshwoodward)

  • Mask-based editing is my favorite from today, much more coming soon! [92 ❤️ 4 🔄]

Boris Cherny (@bcherny)

  • Another example, my actual prompts [232 ❤️ 7 🔄]
  • I am surprised that people are surprised this is how I prompt Claude.

Talk to Claude the way you would a coworker. There’s no secret to prompting. There’s no need to be overly scaffolded or prescriptive for most tasks – give Claude a goal, and it will figure it out.

Back in the Sonnet 3.5 days, your prompt mattered a lot. Nowadays, it’s much more important to communicate to the model:

  1. What you want it to do
  2. How much effort you want it to spend
  3. How it should verify that it did the right thing [8943 ❤️ 503 🔄]
  • Prompt [1119 ❤️ 33 🔄]

Thibault Sottiaux (@thsottiaux)

  • Also! Good evening!! [1309 ❤️ 6 🔄]
  • And we won’t unship the improvements. You get to have your cake and eat it too. See you tomorrow for Day 3! [2256 ❤️ 17 🔄]
  • We shipped four things that were deemed good to great and some math proofs, but the vote is clear and the community demands a reset. I did calibrate it and it seems that the game is rigged in reset’s favor, but such are the rules at the moment.

Therefore … the reset has been processed. Enjoy! [10173 ❤️ 497 🔄]

  • Do I know anyone at @Fourthwall or a related platform? My 8-year-old and I want to use her drawings to sell t-shirts and make her first dollar online.

Here’s a design what do you all think? :) [7 ❤️ 1 🔄]

  • The flip side of this is that if you live in the boring suburbs like me a glass of wine a few days a week is totally worth it [19 ❤️]
  • @dps not sure if this is possible but it’ll be incredible if muse can wait on a call for me then dial me in when there’s a human on the other line [43 ❤️ 2 🔄]

Nan Yu (@thenanyu)

  • I worry, though, that this will cause extreme degradation in systems that no one loves to maintain, but someone has to [25 ❤️ 2 🔄]

Thariq (@trq212)

  • there are some tricky technical problems to figure out!

if Claude can only access your files when your computer is online, it might be effectively blocked on doing work until your computer is back on, so perhaps you want some sort of sync but there are edge cases there [33 ❤️]

  • we’re increasingly going to be moving towards Claude’s “brains” in the cloud and giving Claude “local hands” to operate on your computer

I talked about this a bit on latent space [633 ❤️ 23 🔄]

  • working at a higher level of abstraction has always required understanding the lower level ones, I don’t think coding agents changes this [4206 ❤️ 287 🔄]

Amjad Masad (@amasad)

  • What’s happening in the AI-powered reverse engineering and decompilation is absolutely insane. Pretty soon all software will be de facto open-source.

AI is coming for everything and everyone. [3239 ❤️ 257 🔄]

Guillermo Rauch (@rauchg)

  • “Thinking fast and s̶l̶o̶w̶ a bit less fast under a confidence threshold.”

A very simple feature that I think will be extremely impactful for at-scale AI decision-making. [164 ❤️ 6 🔄]

  • At this rate AI will get us GTA 7 before GTA 6 [5598 ❤️ 211 🔄]

Aaron Levie (@levie)

  • Cyber will be one of the most defining domains for AI in the coming years, and a huge area of focus for most enterprises.

AI is going to now create a whole new level of work for security dealing with the increase of vibe coded issues, agentic attacks, and even accidental agent swarms hunting for data. OpenAI + Hugging Face is just a preview of what’s to come.

Security teams have often been the most strapped for resources teams in the enterprise, and now it’s only going to get more intense. AI agents of course become the solution to this problem as well, and we’ll see a range of new agentic products for protecting code, enterprise systems, mission critical infrastructure, and enterprise data. Huge opportunity here right now.

And it’s going to be a booming market for cyber professionals that can effectively deploy agents for security purposes in the enterprise. Great time to be in security. [164 ❤️ 24 🔄]

Garry Tan (@garrytan)

  • Connie Chan doesn’t want to see a strong Dem party bring about a boom loop to SF and California

She votes against all the things that could make a vibrant city and state and attacks anyone who fights for us. [52 ❤️ 2 🔄]

  • Case study in activism in the guise of journalism manipulating SF politics [32 ❤️ 3 🔄]
  • Maybe 3 more prompts got it to 35fps on 640x480 pulling from 8 CPU cores per frame [9 ❤️ 1 🔄]

Matt Turck (@mattturck)

  • My kids when I take care of home logistics [797 ❤️ 9 🔄]

Zara Zhang (@zarazhangrui)

  • It’s almost impossible to come up with a good product name these days
All the good names have been taken 🫠 [99 ❤️]

Nikunj Kothari (@nikunj)

  • Too many VCs are chasing dopamine.. or rage baiting purposely just to get more views on this platform.

X is not for nuance, so once you say something, you really can’t take it back.

I don’t think they understand how it’s actually destroying their long term brand. Unfortunately, it hurts the people “under” them more than the person talking.

Case in point, I know of two folks who lost deals that were all set because of the drama going on X.

Given how much a commodity “capital” actually is and the sheer number of venture funds, you’d think people would be smarter than this.

But in this era of wanting airtime, I guess very few are playing long term games. [13 ❤️]

  • Blown away by the responses/DMs here - I’ll aim to get back to most of you by tomorrow!! [1 ❤️]
  • Coming to New York next week for a board meeting.. who should I meet? 👋

Prioritizing founders, but open to meeting design engineers or builders who are not pacing the frontier.

DMs open! [123 ❤️]

Peter Steinberger (@steipete)

  • I hooked up our team claw to X to trigger work faster. Unassigned sessions are for anyone to grab. Our agent looks who worked on the related code last and pings people on the server.

Whole thing was a prompt and team server extended itself since plugins are now hot reloadable. [82 ❤️ 4 🔄]

Dan Shipper (@danshipper)

  • we couldn’t have built the @every agent without Claude Managed Agents

extremely fun to get to sit down and chat about it: [132 ❤️ 10 🔄]

  • this is actually true [311 ❤️]
  • there’s a pretty cool new featured app on the slack marketplace! [49 ❤️ 4 🔄]

  • It is wild to me that the only legally allowed form of spam is political campaigns.

And it is also for the most intrusive channel of txt messaging.

Insane,. [14 ❤️]

  • I have had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with @keithmadams for almost 15 years. We worked together at Facebook and now jam on startups together.

It is such an interesting time to explore what it truly means to be a “coder” in today’s ecosystem.

Super fun pod. [11 ❤️]

  • and thank you to the untold number of people who put in the technical work, brick by brick over the generations, to get us to the point where such a wonder is possible. [1639 ❤️ 59 🔄]

  • looking up at the stars with extra awe tonight.

“thy sea is so great and my boat is so small.” [4460 ❤️ 238 🔄]

Claude (@claudeai)

  • Watch the full conversation with @danshipper and Willie Williams on how they built it: [96 ❤️ 6 🔄]
  • The Every team runs as much work as possible through agents. To help the whole team share skills when a new model comes out, they built a company agent on Claude Managed Agents that everyone uses in Slack.

Once it caught on internally, they released it to their subscribers. [1669 ❤️ 93 🔄]

  • In Claude, paste a Google file link or ask for a new doc, sheet, or deck, and it opens beside the chat for you and Claude to edit together. Access follows your Google sharing permissions.

In beta on all paid plans. Give it a try: [947 ❤️ 24 🔄]
