How Hugging Face’s Investor Spots Winners

The Frontier duopoly is over. This week, we got new Frontier models from Google and from Meta. Google launched Gemini Argon four and Meta launched Wonder, which comes in standard and full. So you can run Wonder full, you know. That’s their sense of humor.
Speaker 1 | 00:17 - 01:04
Of course, both new models from these pretty much second tier entrants in the frontier model race topped the benchmarks. But our hands on testing inside of every running running these models for knowledge work, for coding, for design, for writing revealed something a lot more nuanced and di…

- I used to tell people it’s good to “be technical” but I think this is not accurate enough.
If you’re technical you need to be in the details more with the right parts of the code.
If you’re non-technical, being in the details means knowing how things work at the right level. [11 ❤️ 1 🔄]

Back to where it all began [215 ❤️ 7 🔄] - This is one of the most exhilarating times in technology, and this challenge was yet another jaw-dropping moment.
When the details of OpenAI’s agent escape and Hugging Face hack started to emerge, it became clear that agent containment would be one of the most important priorities for any AI infra company.
There are two classes of escapes: ① “escape the network” and ② “escape the matrix” 😁, as in, break the spell of virtualization. OpenAI was the former, where an agent not supposed to have internet access… gained it by hacking another system. Genuinely astonishing and worrisome.
Through this challenge, however, we discovered something even more groundbreaking. A talented white-hat researcher, armed with a swarm of AI agents, expertise and perseverance, “pierced through” the Linux virtualization boundary that nearly every cloud sandbox provider in the world banks on today.
I’m very thankful we got the report, were able to quickly move to protect our customers, found no evidence of customer data compromise, and collaborated with many industry partners to protect the wider internet.
Our confidence and conviction in Vercel Sandbox are even greater now, after some of the smartest, most motivated researchers in the world, and their agents, gave it their best shot. [517 ❤️ 17 🔄]

- The academics don’t actually think about what will happen to startups. They also have no idea how new innovations occur and how much of a miracle that is for CA.
Their ignorance results in misguided policy that will kill the golden goose. No on 40 [112 ❤️ 8 🔄]
- The academics think the founder who raised at $2B valuation can pay but they can’t
You are a founder who owns 50% of your company and you have 20x voting rights. You owe 5% on $10B in the asset seizure tax. You owe $500M of your paper $1B. Find me a way to get a loan for half your illiquid net worth. You cant.
The asset seizure proponents are dishonest and also it’s not a 5% tax on startups. It’s a 50% tax in this simple case. [941 ❤️ 67 🔄]

- People overcomplicate venture investing - it’s deceptively simple..
- You have to win the right to
- Find and invest in exceptional founders
- Just before it’s “consensus”
- Consistently every year
Vast majority of VCs are able to do maybe one of these right, some are able to do a few but to be truly truly great, you genuinely have to do ALL of them right.
And, that consistency of being right is REALLY hard and less talked about. You have to really want it and see it - Djokovic style, enjoying hitting the ball everyday and always focused on the next point to be won.
Regardless, of what your track record is, or how much wealth you have accumulated. Or how many misses you have had. Or, what the TVPI is of the current (or last) fund. Or, which star GP left your firm.
Because the next opportunity might be around the corner, and it might go to someone else, if you didn’t want it enough.
And, sure the naysayers might say the feedback loop is long, you can “fake” it for a while especially if you have an early hit (power law etc) but it does catch up. In at least how your mindset is, how you meet founders and your own ability to capture the next wave. [93 ❤️ 2 🔄]

- We don’t know what ideas to ask for. Bring us what you think is most daring and risky. We’re actively looking to rethink all of our priors.
What we do know is that ambition is infectious. Come to @spc, and build alongside brilliant technologists exploring frontiers of their own.
Express interest here: [63 ❤️ 1 🔄]
- We want to rewrite the capital stack. If you are building a nuclear company, you probably shouldn’t raise the same seed round as an AI app. One size does not fit all.
Instead, we need to get more people working on ideas that seem impossible.
Use this $200k as no-downside fuel to explore a hard problem, and then we’ll help you accelerate toward the right shape of downstream capital. [45 ❤️]
- At @spc, we are trying to reconcile two things:
We have never seen technological progress this rapid or fundamental. Nothing seems impossible.
Capital is flowing to consensus teams, in consensus markets, and with consensus terms.
So we’re running a new experiment: $200K, uncapped, to a handful of unapologetically maximalist thinkers who want to try a truly out-there idea. [413 ❤️ 30 🔄]
